One day, I got to thinking... what would Commodore 64 graphics be like if the faithful old box could run
at modern PC resolutions ? The answer is, pretty good actually, even with the original 16 colours. This site then is a show of original art, done in the 64's true 16 colour palette, but in web-resolution. By the way, koala graphics at 1280px look FANTASTIC !
The original resolution for koala artwork was 320x200. To keep faithful to that scale, the artwork here is produced in 800x500 resolution, but with low res (2 pixels wide for purists), and high res (1 pixel wide) - this of course means more lovely yummy detail. The dark blue operation area is a little taller (600 pixels) to allow for extra content and a more flexible layout.
16 colours, low resolutions ? ... what about IFLI ? ... well, that's basically 2 overlaping images which are pixelshifted and alternated to produce a theoretical 128 colours, which, is getting a bit too much into PC colours for me, doesn't 'feel' right. Plus it's a lot like the Amiga's AGA 'interlace' mode, and hard to look at, but it does work.
I should also point out that the jolly old 64 had 'rules' to how you could lay coloured pixels down,
any 3 colours in an 8x8 character area plus the background colour as I recall, or something to
that effect. Converting a modern image to do that on a PC ignores that rule, so art here is more
of a 'what-could have been', than faithful and limited, but you gotta admit - it DOES look good !!
If you have any questions or ideas for the site, want to add your link or announce an event
or new production, please contact me, otherwise feel free to enjoy the art on display... and maybe
buy something from my shop (calendars, books etc - when I get round to making them).
Also check out the 'related' screen, for C64 books, music and events.
Enjoy...
